To respect and explore plant science. To provide a holistic approach in learning plant science and provide foundation for professional development and path to all other sciences as Plants are inevitable but inimitable to sustain Life.

At St. Francis College for Women with its inception in 1959 the college went on to introduce in 1962 a degree course with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry under the able guidance of Mrs. Leela Simon. The course has been instrumental in developing scientific interest amongst students and comprehends the significance of Fundamental Science in everyday life. As years rolled on new courses with Botany as a core were introduced namely Microbiology and Applied Nutrition.

Objectives

The department aims to

  • Provide a broad knowledge that will assist each student in the field of Plant Sciences to attain her potential as a botanist and enhance her skills in the field of study
  • Help the student participate in the basic activities of the department and acquire the essential botanical foundation for her development into a productive and versatile plant science student.
  • Develop scientific temper that will provide leadership for the nation, advance knowledge through research, and apply new knowledge for improving the quality of life.
  • Respond effectively to changing needs and conditions through a system of educational planning and evaluation.
