French is the second most widely learned foreign language in the world. The students of St. Francis are given a golden opportunity not only to learn this prolific foreign language but also, to discover a new culture and a plethora of opportunities that can be explored with its knowledge.
The Department of French was established in the year 1984. Learning French is not only an asset to the student but also enriches the mind and opens up new horizons, both personal and professional. The department comprises of able, dynamic lecturers who are not only highly qualified but even well-experienced in teaching French as a foreign language. The faculty encourages students to speak in French from the beginning of the session. Activity-based learning is envisaged to enable the students to learn the language effectively.
The department offers French as a second language to all disciplines – arts, sciences, commerce and management for 2 to 4 semesters.
Objectives
- The students are taught French with the aim to acquire the linguistic skills of basic user level A1 (first year) and level A2 (second year) according to CEFR.
- The students can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases. The students can communicate in simple and routine tasks.
- The students are oriented towards the DELF - Diplôme d'études en langue française which is a certification that measures the competencies and skills of non-native speakers. It is conducted by the International Centre for French Studies under the Ministry of National Education, France. The students are encouraged to take the DELF exam so that they can attain this International Diploma through learning the language in college.
