Department of History
There’s nothing like the past to put the present in context, and no time like the present to learn about the past. The Department of History which is one of the oldest departments of the College strives to uphold this motto.
The Department of History was established in 1959, the year of the inception of the College. It has made much use of the autonomous status of the college to restructure the syllabus to suit the needs of the students. The curriculum focuses on the changes in the society and the economy throughout Indian history, rather than emphasize merely on political history. The syllabus is no longer centred on the conventional method of dates and names, but has been framed to give students a panoramic view of the development of Indian culture and civilization through the ages, and also a glimpse of parallely occurring developments in the world. The curriculum is also designed to help students who aspire for the Civil Services, and prepares them for other competitive examinations as well. The Department was the trend setter in introducing Tourism as part of the curriculum as early as 2001. It has guided most of the departments of History of autonomous colleges in the city to adopt innovations in their curriculum too. The Department also has a vibrant club named Quest Hour that provides students of History a platform to explore beyond classroom knowledge.
