Department of Political Science
The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest departments of the College with a long legacy of academic excellence and student achievements.
The Department of Political Science was established in 1960 right after the inception of the College. The main focus of the department is to introduce and develop knowledge of political institutions, practices, concepts, theories that allows better understanding of the political conditions and working of governments in India and the world. The department offers papers such as ‘Understanding Political Theory’, ‘Constitution and Politics of India’, ‘Western Political Thought’ and ‘Indian Political Thought’ along with papers on ‘International Relations’ and ‘Global Politics’. The department seeks to make the students well-versed with all the major branches of the discipline. It equips students with research skills through various research focused workshops. It also encourages aptitude building and application of classroom knowledge through student run wall magazine under the guidance of the department and other platforms such as Mock United Nations sessions.
Objectives
- Acquaint the under-graduate students with the meaning of ‘politics’ and what it means to be ‘political’
- Introduction to key concepts of the discipline
- Train students to analytically and critically relate same to the realities of contemporary politics in the country as well as the world
- Provide students with an effective academic ground to help them secure positions in premier institutions of higher education
